Cordyceps, a genus of more than 400 species within the order Hypocreales, that are commonly known as vegetable caterpillars, or caterpillar fungi. Cordyceps militaris parasitizes insects. It forms a small 1"-2" inch mushroom-like fruiting structure with a bright orange head, or cap. Cordyceps militaris is notorious for being a particularly tricky fungus to cultivate although it can be done successfully indoors with the right substrate. This is understandable due to its extremely selective and strange food choices in the wild. Many non-insect substrates have been tested out including beans, lentils, quinoa, and rice. Based in many reports and empirical testing, White or Brown rice are the Best choices to cultivate this particular species, with the most abundant yields.
